How to Protect Yourself From Dry Skin

Every year I tell myself I'm going to get better about taking care of my skin. But, this year I really mean it. I'm starting to hit that age where my skin doesn't quite bounce back like it used to after I forget to rinse off my makeup before bed.  And, it all comes down to one thing: I've probably not been taking care of it quite as well as I should have been.

I've always had relatively easy skin to care for. I never had acne, didn't have to deal with oil and dryness or redness was never really an issue for me. As many of you know, I went away to school in Florida and the humidity kept my skin feeling (and looking) so young. Then, I moved to D.C., and it all went downhill.

You guys... WINTER IS ROUGH. Like, what? My skin started getting incredibly dry and I felt like I couldn't quite find anything that would keep the moisture locked in. Indiana is no better (it's probably worse if we're being honest). I took some time to learn a lot more about skincare over the past few months, and it's a topic i'm becoming pretty passionate about.

I've gotten quite a few questions when I've posted about this in the past, so I thought I'd hop on here and share how I'm combatting Dry Skin this winter. Here we go:

1. Drink More Water

I sound just like my mom with this one, and you guys she was right. Drinking water helps release so many toxins and keeps you at your best inside and out. Granted, there are many who say this has no impact on skin. But, it works for me. I try to drink at least 8 glasses a day, and while I don't always get there it has made me feel a lot better about my skin issues.

2. Pay Attention to Your Moisturizer

Okayyy. This one is BIG. I've tried what feels like thousands of moisturizers over the past few years, and I wanted to showcase a few of my favorites at different price points.

My latest obsession is the Dermalogica Calm Water Gel paired with the Barrier Defense Booster. Both products are great for sensitive skin, and for those battling the winter weather. The Calm Water Gel goes on really smooth, and I use it every evening and morning to keep my skin hydrated. I'll also apply the Barrier Defense Booster before my makeup to help protect my skin from the dryness. I have to admit i've been a huge fan of Dermalogica for the past few years, and use their products for the majority of my skincare routine.

3. Pick Hydrating Makeup

I recently realized that a lot of the makeup I had been using was just that, Makeup. It didn't actually do anything to benefit my skin, which was fine for Florida living by not so great for winters in Indiana. So, I started researching the most hydrating foundations and primers and now I swear by the La Mer Long Wear Foundation. It's so hydrating and lasts all day, which explains the above average price point.

How do you keep your skin in check this time of year? I'd love to hear your secrets in the comments below.

XO, K
